About
The School of Gemmology of University of Barcelona is an official teaching Centre, created by Ministerial order dated October 22, 1971. It is a centre of teaching and research which aims at teaching both the theory and practice of gemmology.
The school imparts the corresponding teachings for the scientific and technical training to all those people who want to carry out activities related with gemstones, so that they can apply them to the industry. It imparts the teachings according to the current regulations of the Statute of the University of Barcelona (year 2003); The School is linked to the Geology Faculty of University of Barcelona. All the teachers at the School are gemmologists and geologists.

Our School
- Teaches courses that enable students to obtain the certificates of Gemmologist, Diamond Specialist, and Specialist in Synthetic and Treated Gemstones. It also imparts Gemstone Cutting courses.
- Promotes the study and research of natural gemstones, synthetic gemstones and their manufacturing processes, as well as the knowledge of all the products of diverse origin which are used as imitations or substitutes of gemstones.
- Establishes contacts with the national and foreign centres and associations that may be related to the purpose of the school.
- Collaborates with research projects related to the teaching of Gemmology. It organizes seminars, conferences and congresses on the matters of its competence.
- Provides the necessary knowledge and promotes the update adapted for the practice of the professional activities of Gemmologist.
Courses
Gemmologist Course
- It is structured in two years with practical and theoretical sessions. During the first year 150 school hours are given (90 of theory and 60 of practices), and during the second year 220 school hours (90 of theory and 130 of practices) are taught. A total of 37 credits are given. After overcoming the corresponding theoretical and practical exams, the Gemmologist certificate is obtained or, if you have a degree, the studies will equate to those of postgraduate. Gemmologist certificate allows access to the examination of European gemmologist awarded by the Foundation of European Education in Gemmology (FEEG).
Diamond Specialist Course
- It has the duration of an academic year, with a total of 160 hours (40 of theory and 120 of practices). A total of 16 credits are given. The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of natural diamonds, synthetic diamonds, treatments and substitutes and imitations, both from the professional and amateur point of view.
SPECIALIST IN SYNTHETIC & TREATED STONES
- It has the duration of an academic year, with a total of 160 hours (40 of theory and 120 of practices). A total of 16 credits are given. The aim of the course is to deepen in the study of the synthetic material used in Gemmology, as well as the treatments applied to the gems to modify its appearance. In the theoretical sessions are explained concepts about the crystal growth and are studied in detail the processes of synthesis and growth of gems; also the treatments of gems are studied.
Specialisation in Gemstone Cutting
- The aim of this course is to provide students with all the necessary training to cut any kind gem and any type of cutting style, from the simplest to the most sophisticated. It also offers the necessary formation to use specialized machinery in order to give them the highest professionalism. The duration of the course is 50 hours. A total of 5 credits are given.
Advanced Gemstone Cutting
- Extension of the knowledge and technique of gemstone cutting. The aim of the course is that the student can be able to cut gemmological material with any type of cutting style. The duration of the course is 30 hours. A total of 3 credits are given.
Initiation to Gemstone Cutting
- The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic knowledge to perform the simplest cuts of gems (cabochons), and meet the necessary machinery to cut and know how to use it. The duration of the course is 30 hours. A total of 3 credits are given. This course is directed to persons interested in knowing cut gems both from a professional point of view as from the point of view amateur.
