About
The Academie voor Mineralogie (ACAM) was founded in Schoten in 1970 by people with a common passion: minerals. Some of its members were interested by fashioned minerals: gemstones. Interest became passion and gemmology courses started in 1984.
In the early years it took one year to train a candidate. Gemmology became an increasingly complex field. As a result, the course was extended to two years as from 1991 to keep up with developments.
At ACAM we believe that knowledge is power. Courses are conducted by a dynamic team of highly skilled gemmologists and industry experts whose aim are to provide the highest level of competence and expertise. This ambitious goal is achieved by a sound theoretical knowledge combined with innumerous hours of practical work with professional equipment.
During the first part of the course candidates go for the basics: geology, crystallography as well as optical and physical tests in the lab. The main subjects of the second part are synthetics and gem treatments.
Decision was made to apply for FEEG-membership in 1999. ACAM was audited and membership was obtained during the 2000 Leiden (Netherlands) FEEG board meeting. A significant milestone!
In 2003 ACAM was on the move. A three-floor building was acquired in Merksem (Antwerp). Gemmology courses are now held on the first floor in a lab state of the art. In January 2005 the 7th FEEG Symposium was organized by ACAM in the City of Diamonds Antwerp.
ACAM is in for an ever-lasting collaboration with its French-speaking counterpart Royale Société Belge de Gemmologie (SRBG). Together with the other European teaching centers ACAM will have to deal with the challenges to come. The modern study of gems: disclosure and detection of sophisticated treatments and new synthetics.
