Study Gemmology with the German Gemmological Association (DGemG)
Your specialized knowledge of gemmology opens up new opportunities for you.
In 85 years of history the German Gemmological Association has developed from a one man laboratory into a well known institution of worldwide reputation. The main goals of the association according to the statutes are to support gemmology as science and technique and the development of gemmological training and education. Following these goals consequently has led to the international reputation that the German Gemmological Association enjoys today.
Proof for the expert recognition of the work of the German Gemmological Association are numerous co-operations with the universities of Mainz, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Würzburg, etc., the university of applied science of Rheinland-Pfalz and numerous gemmological associations and institutes worldwide.
Representatives of DGemG are members of all relevant international organizations of the gemstone industry, e.g. the International Gemmological Conference (IGC), the International Coloured Gemstone Association (ICA), the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), the Gemstone Industry and Laboratory Conference (GILC) und the Federation for European Education in Gemmology (FEEG).
More than 30,000 students from more than 80 different countries have participated in the training and education programs of the DGemG until today, in German or English language. The large number underlines the international recognition of the German Gemmological Traning Centre in Idar-Oberstein.
Many of those students are Fellows of the German Gemmological Association (FGG) and thus support the popularity of the association worldwide.
The different seminar programs at the German Gemmological Training Centre in Idar-Oberstein offer perfect conditions for modern gemmological education and training that is designed to meet the specific requirements of the gem and jewellery industry.
The Educational Training Center of the German Gemmological Association has been providing this specialized knowledge of gemstones, both in theory and practice, since it was founded in 1932. In particular, the laboratories, with their modern state of the art equipment, and the extensive gemstone collection, to which the students have access during class make it Europe's leading educational and research institute for gemstones. Get to know the characteristics, deposits, developments, and criteria for determining the value of gemstones. Develop or refine your ability to differentiate between gemstones and their imitations and forgeries. Meet interesting people from around the world who have one thing in common: Their fascination with gemstones.
The Training Center is located in the heart of the gemstone capital Idar-Oberstein. There, where centuries-old knowledge of traditional gemstone cutting blends with the modern creative impulses of local artists and studios, you will find all the requirements for hands-on training and education.
The most effective way for a high-quality gemmological education is the DGemG Gemmology Diploma Course, consisting of the three DGemG-Gemmology training programmes:
- the Coloured Stones Programme
- plus the Diamond Programme
- plus the Pearls/Organic Substances Programme
The DGemG-Gemmology Diploma Course provides the theoretical basics and practical skills which are necessary for the examination and identification of gemstones and their numerous synthetics and simulants as well as treated gemstones. Practical diamond grading and identification of pearls and other organic substances are also part of this education.
The course leads to an internationally recognized qualification, the Diploma in Gemmology of the German Gemmological Association.
The graduates may apply for Fellowship of the German Gemmological Association and, upon election, the right to carry the title F.G.G.. The Fellowship is a highly sought after title of international reputation.
